NRG Acoustics SG-4: Multichannel surround sound
Multichannel audio is a way of enriching the sound processing superior quality of an audio source with additional audio channels from audio speakers that surround the audience (surround channels), providing sound from a 360 radius in the horizontal plane (2D) compared to "screen channels" (centre, [front] left, and [front] right) coming from only on the listener's frontward arc.
Multichannel audio is portrayed by a listener spot or sweet spot where audio effects work most effectively, and presents a constant or frontward perspective of the sound field towards listener around this location. The technique enhances the belief of sound spatialization by using sound localization; a listener's ability to know the location or origin of a detected sound in path and range. This typically is achieved by means of multiple discrete audio channels routed to an array of loudspeakers.
There are many multichannel surround sound based models and techniques, varying in processing and saving tactics as well as the number and the positioning of of extra stations.
NRG Acoustics SG-4: Fields of application
Though cinema and soundtracks signify the foremost purposes of surround approaches, its scope of application is much wider than that as multichannel surround sound enables creation of an audio-environment for all sorts of functions. Multichannel techniques could be used to reproduce contents as various as music, conversation, natural or synthetic sounds for cinema, television, broadcasting, or pc's. With regard to music content for instance, a live performance could use multichannel techniques in the context associated with an open-air concert, of a musical theatre or for broadcasting; for a film particular techniques are adapted to movie theatre, or to home (e.g. home cinema systems).
The narrative place is also a content that may be enhanced through multichannel techniques. This applies mainly to cinema narratives, for instance the conversation from the characters of a film, but may be also utilized on plays for theatre, to a meeting, or to blend voice-based comments in an archeological site or monument. As an example, an exhibition may perhaps be improved with topical ambient sound of water, birds, train or equipment sound. Topical natural sounds can also be used in instructive applications.
NRG Acoustics SG-4 - Additional fields of application include video gaming systems, computers along with other platforms.
In such applications, the content would typically be synthetic noise maded by the computer device in interaction with its user. Significant work has been specifically done using multichannel for enhanced situation awareness in military services and general public safety purposes.
