NRG Acoustics SG-4: Surround sound
Multi channel audio is a method of enriching the sound reproduction superior quality of an audio source with additional audio channels from audio speakers that surround the listener (surround channels), providing sound with a 360 radius in the horizontal plane (2D) as opposed to "screen channels" (middle, [front] left, and [front] right) coming from only on the listener's forward arc.
Multichannel audio is portrayed by a listener location or sweet spot where audio effects perform best, and offers a limited or frontward perspective of the sound field towards listener as of this location. The technique enhances the perception of sound spatialization by manipulating sound localization; a listener's capability to know the location or origin of a noticed sound in route and range. This typically is achieved with the use of multiple discrete audio channels routed to an array of loudspeakers.
There are numerous multichannel sorround sound systems based types and methods, differing in reproduction and saving solutions along with the amount and the positioning of more stations.
NRG Acoustics SG-4: Domains of use
Though cinema and soundtracks represent the main uses of surround approaches, its scope of application is wider than that as multichannel audio permits creation of an audio-environment for all sorts of purposes. Multichannel surround sound techniques may be used to reproduce contents as various as music, speech, synthetic or natural sounds for cinema, television, transmissions, or computers. With regard to music content to illustrate, a live performance may make use of multichannel approaches to the context of an open-air show, of a musical theatre or perhaps for broadcasting; for a film particular techniques are adapted to movie theatre, or even to residence (e.g. home cinema systems).
The narrative place is also a content that can be improved through multichannel solutions. This is applicable mainly to cinema narratives, for example, the speech from the characters of a film, but might even be applied to plays for theatre, to a convention, or to blend voice-based comments in an archeological site or monument. As an example, an exhibit might well be improved with topical background sound of water, wild birds, train or machine noise. Applicable natural sounds could also be used in informative programs.
NRG Acoustics SG-4 - Other fields of application include video gaming systems, computers and other platforms.
In such purposes, the material would typically be synthetic noise produced by the computer equipment in interaction with its user. Significant work has been specifically done using surround sound for enhanced situation awareness in government and general population safety purposes.
