NRG Acoustics A-70: Multichannel audio

Multichannel audio is a method of enhancing the sound processing superior quality of any audio source with additional audio channels from speakers that surround the audience (surround channels), providing sound from a 360 radius in the horizontal plane (2D) contrary to "screen channels" (middle, [front] left, and [front] right) originating only from the listener's forward arc.

Surround sound is portrayed by a listener spot or sweet spot where the audio effects performs best, and offers a limited or forward perspective of the sound area to the listener at this location. The technique improves the perception of sound spatialization by manipulating sound localization; a listener's capability to know the location or origin of a detected sound in direction and range. Typically this is achieved by utilizing multiple discrete audio channels routed to an array of loudspeakers.

There are many surround sound based models and techniques, differing in reproduction and saving options combined with the number and location of extra channels.

NRG Acoustics HJ-17: Fields of use

Though cinema and soundtracks signify the main purposes of surround approaches, its scope of application is much wider than that as multichannel surround sound enables creation of an audio-environment for all variations of functions. Multichannel techniques may be used to recreate contents as various as music, conversation, synthetic or natural sounds for cinema, television, transmissions, or computer systems. Relating to music material as an illustration, an active performance can make use of multichannel approaches to the context of an open-air concert, of an musical theatre or perhaps transmissions; for a film certain techniques are adjusted to movie theater, or even to home (e.g. home cinema systems).

The narrative area is also a content that could be enhanced through multichannel techniques. This is applicable mainly to cinema narratives, for example, the dialog from the characters of a film, but will also be utilized on plays for theatre, to a seminar, or to integrate voice-based comments in an archeological site or monument. As an example, an exhibition might be improved with topical background sound of water, birds, train or equipment sound. Topical natural sounds can also be used in informative applications.

In these purposes, the material would typically be artificial noise maded by the computer device in interaction with its user. Significant work has been specifically done using multichannel audio for enhanced situation awareness in armed service and general public safety purposes.
